“After our participation in FB2020, the senior t “After our participation in FB2020, the senior team members decided to switch to an Electric Vehicle. Unfortunately, just after this decision was taken the first lockdown was imposed which created a huge gap after which the seniors who took the decision of switching to Electric Vehicle were no longer on the team. We were left with seven core team members. It was extremely difficult for us to stick to the decision that our seniors made as we all know how expensive it is to build an EV, especially in India. We decided to spend the lockdown studying and designing our first electric vehicle. As soon as the lockdown was lifted we started manufacturing and before the second wave of covid our vehicle was on wheels. But our finances weren’t looking good as we invested almost everything for manufacturing.

Second lockdown was imposed and at that time we were not only out of funds but we were also out of manpower. Our team is self-funded and as we didn’t receive any support from our college we thought this might be it for us. We started selling off scrap from the workshop and we used that money to build our car. We then started an online recruitment and charged a small joining fee from the new recruits. Pushing our limits we tried to increase the funds and somehow managed to build our first ever electric car. Our participation at FB2022 with our first EV got us the overall 8th position.”

Majority of my childhood I was surrounded by DC mo Majority of my childhood I was surrounded by DC motors and toy cars. I would disassemble the toy cars and fix them in my own way. Moving forward, while I was in my first year I had an option to select between EC and Mechanical engineering. I opted to pursue mechanical engineering. There were multiple innovative things happening in college and that's where I heard about Formula Student. Since our college had close to 16 teams working on different projects I was overwhelmed as to where I really wanted to sign up. Hence I landed up applying for multiple team recruitments and was also selected for the most of them but eventually, I had to make a decision. I had the opportunity to join the CV team in our college which was 16 years old. Since everyone was jumping to get into it I was hesitant to join as I thought I might be sidelined. Hence, I decided to join Team Chimera.

Compared to the other campuses where there are four to five thousand students per year. Our campus had one thousand students and considering 180 mechanical engineering students they would then further get divided amongst their choice of joining one of the 16 teams. Eventually, we would just get 3-4 students who would want to join the team.

The year 2020 was a pretty bad season for us. Due to a lot of reasons, first being we faced multiple failures during testing as we were not prepared with the inventory. We wanted to improve the EV packaging but mechanically we just ended up using parts from our previous vehicle. Every time we took our car for testing we would find an issue and then eventually we would have to bring the car back to the workshop. Just one day before we were about to ship the car for FB2020 we decided to shoot a video for our sponsors and social media. Unfortunately, our driver wasn’t experienced and ended up hitting the car on a speed bump which led to one of the front wheels being completely damaged and the half shaft being sliced into two pieces. We decided to take an old upright and managed to be there at the event. The next day our juniors managed to get the manufactured part. Unfortunately, we did not clear the TI. All in all, it was a great learning experience.
“I had the opportunity to attend the 2013 Indian “I had the opportunity to attend the 2013 Indian Grand Prix which was held at the Buddh International Circuit. I started developing a liking for motorsports and hence I wanted to pursue a career in the same. So, I started researching how I could get close to getting into the world of motorsports. Finally, I took up mechanical engineering and was introduced to Formula Student in my first year. I had to join the team, there was no second thought to it.

During FB2019, we weren’t able to clear the TI and that was really heartbreaking for me as it was my first time attending an event. I promised myself that if I ever got the chance to lead the team I would do everything in my power to get the team a podium finish. In my fourth year I was offered the position of team captain and with the role came to a lot of setbacks as the pandemic had everyone on the edge of their seats.

The need of the hour was to educate the juniors and I made sure the juniors had the chance to work on the car as much as the seniors did. Since most of the team members are F1 fans we would also host team gatherings where we would watch races together. When I look back at my journey on the team so far, I feel good about two things: The first one being that our team stood 3rd overall at FB2022 and the second one being that my juniors are well trained and are capable of taking up a podium finish at the future events.”

(3/3) Being the only one who had practiced the max (3/3)
Being the only one who had practiced the maximum as I was the main driver, I realized how much I loved driving and how badly I wanted to drive our car at the competition while I was advised to take complete bed rest. Our college didn’t want us to go ahead with our participation at SUPRA after the incident but I kept pushing them to let the team go as it took us 4 years to come up to this level. So, the other members decided to go ahead and participate at the event. The very next day our seniors in Mumbai helped the team transport the car to Delhi. In my absence, the team was disappointed and in that time the vice-captain - Aditya Pawar played a major role in motivating them and taking them safely to the event. At the event, our team tried their best to fix the damages that were caused to the car due to the accident but it wasn’t possible. Nevertheless, they tried to complete every event. There was a wobble due to which we couldn’t compete in the endurance event. Once again we were so close to taking our car on the track.

After my recovery, we were selected for Formula Student UK. This time we were representing India and not just Ratnagiri. We were the only Indian team under the combustion category along with IIT Bombay under the electric category. We cleared the TI but due to insufficient time we couldn’t do a test run and then the engine just wouldn’t crank.
This led us to not being able to make it to the endurance, which took me back to the times I was not able to drive what we created.

I always believed that if you build a race car you have to drive it, which is one of the major reasons why I pursued my career as a professional race driver. I was approached by Momentum Racing in 2021 to participate at the National Racing Championship and I continue driving for them. One of the plus points about being a formula student and a professional race driver is that you are always a step ahead compared to the other drivers as you know the technicalities of the vehicle.

(2/3) I took up the role of team captain very prof (2/3)
I took up the role of team captain very professionally. In 2016, we focused on building a functional car and we were selected for FS Russia. Due to the 2016 plane crash in Russia we couldn’t make it for the event. But we had our car ready and hence we decided to participate in Formula Student India 2016.
There we won ‘The most popular car’ award. From building a car that weighed 460kgs we managed to build a car that weighed 250 kgs. This was the first achievement as a team and I was really proud of it.

For Formula Bharat 2018, we couldn’t get our car to the competition as it wasn’t completed due to insufficient funds. As most of the potential sponsors weren’t aware about our college and about formula student they would straight up comment saying, “You should grow mangoes instead of building a car”. Basically mocking us, since Ratnagiri is known for mangoes and we resided there. Finance was a huge issue for us but that wouldn’t stop us from improving the car. We focused on building an aerodynamic car, it weighed 200 kgs even lighter than our previous car. Our team then went on to participate at FFS AND FMAE in the same year. We won the Best Design & CAE award in FMAE Formula Student 2017.

For SUPRA SAE 2018, we had built one of our best cars as we had omitted the aerodynamics making it weigh close to 180 kgs. Unfortunately, that year was a life changing experience for all of us as we met with an accident while transporting the car. The plan was to transport our car to Mumbai so we could share the transportation with the teams in Mumbai. We would always travel with our car for events and while we were around 100 kilometres away from our college in Chiplun, suddenly our truck lost control and toppled over and what saved us from falling into the valley was a huge rock. Few of our team members had some injuries but as I was sitting next to the driver my legs were stuck because of the same rock that saved us. The car also had some damages from the incident. I couldn’t walk for 3 months straight as I had some stitches from the accident. This was my second turning point.

(1/3) The reason I took up engineering was only be (1/3)
The reason I took up engineering was only because I was passionate about cars. But while I was in my first year of mechanical engineering I realized that just pursuing engineering alone was not going to help me pursue what I wanted to do. To keep my passion alive I used to regularly go go-karting. In my second year, I was introduced to Formula Student by my seniors when they came to our class to make an announcement about recruitment and surprisingly I was the only one who signed up from my entire class. I would chase the seniors everyday asking them to share more details about the interview date. Finally, the team captain mailed me a pdf and told me that there would be a quiz that would be held based on the rulebook. Trust me, I have never finished reading a book, but guess what? I did it for the quiz. The rulebook is a guide to build a car just like a recipe book for an engineer. I was selected to be on the team MH-08 Racing, that's where my journey began.

We were based out in Ratnagiri and unfortunately, we didn’t have an industrial area where we could build our car. Hence we decided to move our workshop to Kolhapur. At that time we were aiming to participate in the first-ever Formula Design Challenge 2015 held in India. Our team used to test the vehicle on roads that were shut for some reason in Kolhapur. Looking at the car in motion I knew this is where I wanted to be. Moving forward, since our team was not connected to the Formula Student community at that time hence we had no idea about the type of material one needs to use. Our car weighed around 460 kgs and the chassis was so huge that if there were a crash it wouldn’t break. During the technical inspection, Claude gave us a brief for about an hour on how heavy our car was. On the second last day of the event, we were extremely disappointed about not being able to clear the TI. I had just one thought in my mind, why build a car that cannot even run on the track?

After the event, my seniors came up to me asking me to take up the Role as Team Captain as it was their last year on the team. That moment was one of the turning points in my entire FS journey

“I love researching and learning new things. Whe “I love researching and learning new things. When I joined Velocita Racing in my first year my role was of a Drivetrain engineer but I wanted to learn more and hence I took up working on costing and business plans for the team and learned a lot from it. During my second year as everything was shifted online, we worked on using a turbocharger. Our focus was to keep our numbers correct and to work on our simulations. The need of the hour was knowledge transfer to our juniors which I feel would have been more helpful if it were in person but we did our best to host it online.

In my third year, I was promoted to vice-captain. At that time I was wearing multiple hats because I was working with costing, sponsorship, manufacturing, and other areas too. So, I suggested that we bring a change into our hierarchy of working. Earlier the Team Captain and Vice-captain looked into most of the areas but then we made changes by appointing a lead for each sub-system. In my fourth year as I was the only senior who knew about cost, I had to learn more to keep up and then teach the juniors on my team.

We were just five seniors that were left on the team and as we were in our last year we all were really worried about the future of velocita racing. After we could pass on what we learned to our juniors, we were happy and convinced that this is not it for our team, as our juniors were even more determined and dedicated than we were.”

Our love for engines drove us to build a go-kart using a scooter engine. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful in building one as we also had to apply for further studies. After I joined SRM University I was introduced to Formula Student. I knew that I had to join the team to fulfill my dream of building a vehicle. I decided to attend the team recruitment test but I couldn’t clear it. So I decided to reach out to the captain and requested him for an interview. Luckily, I got selected to be on the team as a composite engineer and that’s how I was one step closer to my dream. During my tenure on the team, I had the opportunity to work on the car for 4 years and I am incredibly grateful that even after graduating I continue working as a composite engineer in my professional life as well.”

“Our team spent close to 3 years researching and “Our team spent close to 3 years researching and building our current vehicle. To take you back to how we started; we decided to build everything from scratch as the car that our super seniors worked on was built in a month. At that time, we were just 3 members who joined the team in our second year. Moving forward the biggest challenge that stood in front of us was that our team had no senior members left and we had no experience in building a vehicle or managing a team.

Unfortunately, our college wasn’t supportive and hence we didn’t have a workshop. With COVID making things even more difficult the workshop that we had earlier asked us to move out. After spending close to a month searching for a workshop, we finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel when we got to know that one of our team members' contacts owned an industrial gala and so we decided to visit the space. As the owner opened the shutter of the workshop we saw that it was covered with dust and had no proper flooring as it was previously a forging workshop that needed sand to absorb the vibrations. Since we had no other option we went ahead with it. Looking at the bright side we decided to visit the other industrial galas surrounding the workshop asking them if they could help us in any way. One of them was ready to help us with their welding machine to weld the chassis. We welded the chassis at their workshop and then bought it back to ours to assemble it. As we were low on funds we couldn’t afford a platform where we could assemble the vehicle. So we decided to use an old bed on which we placed a wooden plank covered with a steel sheet to assemble our vehicle. Pushing through the different phases of building the vehicle we made up our minds that nothing was stopping us from taking our car to FB2022.

Our goal while participating at FB2022 was not to be at the top. We set a very realistic goal of being able to clear the mechanical scrutineering as it was our first year and we were successful in achieving this goal. I am so proud of what we accomplished as a team despite the setbacks, discouragement and not having something as essential as having a workshop.”

During my freshman year while I was exploring the During my freshman year while I was exploring the campus I came across a car on display and was curious to know more about it. So, I approached the team members and they explained to me about Formula Student. I was fascinated by how undergraduate students had an opportunity like this. Hence, I thought of applying and got selected to be a part of the team. While everything seemed new and overwhelming it became difficult for me to manage academics and my time on the team and I was about to give up my position. Luckily, I had my seniors who talked me through how to manage my time, and hence I decided to stay.

Being the only team working on campus during COVID was very difficult to manage. As not everyone's parents were supportive of sending their kids to college. Since we were gearing up to participate at FB2022 which was taking place in a few days we had to keep moving forward. Our team has not been able to clear the endurance since 2019 but everything was so different for us this year. We cleared the TI and were moving forward faster. During the endurance, we see our car completing half a lap and suddenly it is in the opposite direction as it spun. Our expectations just dropped as we just started our first lap and the car had spun already. The drivers did a great job despite our major problem with the gear shifter, as our car was stuck in the fourth gear. We participated this year with a vision of clearing the endurance and stood second overall. So, I believe if we can achieve this during such a difficult time our team surely can perform even better in the coming events
