About the Speaker:
Ramesha BS currently works as a Sr. Manager- Academic Initiatives at Altair Engineering Hyderabad. He holds an M.Tech (Advanced Manufacturing Engineering) degree from REC – Surathkal (NITK), and has more than 20 years of experience in CAE field since 2002. Ramesha has worked in the areas of Product Design and Development, Technical Support, Interface Specialist, Business development, Pre-sales and Post-Sales Technical support.

Present Role – Ramesha is part of Altair’s global academic initiatives to bridge the gap between academia and industry, and create a common platform that facilitates interaction. He is also a part of Altair’s Startup Program, Altair’s Strategic Initiatives and Altair’s CSR Initiatives.

In his earlier role, for 8 years, Ramesha had contributed to business development roles at major automotive OEM’s, Key Tier 1 Suppliers and engineering consultancy organizations in Southern Part of India. He also played a role in enabling technical support of HyperWorks products in Chennai and Hyderabad Region.

About the Speakers:
At Ather, Hithesh works closely with teams across the Business and Engineering verticals to make data available for them to come up with creative solutions. Buried in meetings, he fiddles with ways to build reliable applications. Outside Ather, Hithesh tries to make the best of the time he has – playing instruments, running, planning solo travels and trying to write about his journey in blogs.

Sangeeth enjoys that Ather is the place where data, software, and connected tech come together to redefine the automobile industry. With software being propelled by data, he foresees a huge force in the making. He is part of building this from the ground up at Ather, where data science is making the journey from 0 to 1—defining and redefining data processes, innovating new products backed by data insights, and stepping up feature development, Sangeeth has his hands full, except when he makes time to belt a few songs at a Karaoke.

Karan has completed his B.Eng Mechanical Engineering from Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, India, and an M.Sc in Racing Engine Systems from Oxford Brookes University, UK. He is a highly motivated individual with the dream and passion of working in the motorsports industry.

Karan is currently pursuing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering, focusing primarily on the development of next generation advanced compression ignition and multi-mode engines.

He is experienced in CFD for automobiles and electronic components.

2 PM // 60 mins Design for Manufacturability – A Novel Approach using Virtual Testing
Content Covered:
The push to more innovative and complex products helps to differentiate products from competitors; it also results in designers being forced to make trade-off decisions between speed, cost, and quality. As products become more complex, the possibility of component interference increases, which, in turn, threatens the reliability of the system. In addition, the environments these intricate products operate in are complex. This further complicates the decision process, as insights into a variety of environments are required.

Engineers need methods for assessing how multiple product designs behave in any environment that will not add substantial time to the constantly shrinking development schedules. However, challenges come from more than just the actual product or its environment; there are internal issues that make product design a challenge, as well. For one thing, development is often hamstrung with limited resources.

Considering that multiple iterations of prototypes may be needed to get the results you are looking for, it is easy to see how the overall waste can add up. There is also the physical constraint; you need to have the actual prototype built to begin testing, adding more time to the development cycle.

In addition, there are numerous physical tests that can be conducted on a prototype – acoustics / vibration, fatigue, stress, fluid flow, etc. – all requiring different amounts of time to be completed. Fatigue testing, for example, can be highly time- consuming to perform depending on the material and the type of loading used. When companies are limited in their amount of design resources, the additional time spent building and testing prototypes can seriously delay product launch dates. Prototypes are used to reduce the risk that a design may not perform as intended, however, in general, prototypes cannot eliminate all risk.

Content Covered:
Mechanical design is, by its nature, multidisciplinary work involving competence and knowledge from diverse fields, for instance, solid modelling, creativity, material science, production technology, control techniques, marketing and economics. In addition, the classic design process of a mechanical part or system has been characterized by sequential activities.

One important method to realize the integration of engineering activities and thus establish an intelligent manufacturing system is to be able to integrate VE technologies. The developments of advanced computer-based technologies open better opportunities for inter-linked VE environments because digital models and simulations are used instead of physical objects and operations on them. Compared with physical objects, virtual/digital models better facilitate communication and collaboration among engineers and other stakeholders that are located at different locations. Thus, an integrated VE environment enables work collaboration on a single design regardless of geographical location.

2 PM // 90 mins Vehicle Multibody Dynamics Simulation Using Simscape Multibody
Content Covered:
Simscape™ Multibody™ provides a multibody simulation environment for 3D mechanical systems, such as vehicle suspensions, robots, construction equipment, and aircraft landing gear. It formulates and solves the equations of motion for the complete mechanical system. You can import complete CAD assemblies, including all masses, inertias, joints, constraints, and 3D geometry, into your model. An automatically generated 3D animation lets you visualize the system dynamics.

 

In this live session, Veer Alakshendra from MathWorks will introduce you to Simscape Multibody. He will demonstrate how to build a half-car quarter car multibody model relevant to Formula Student teams. Then, he will show the importance of running optimization to estimate vehicle suspension parameters. Finally, Veer will demonstrate a full vehicle multibody model coupled with electric powertrain running on a race track.
